In Canada, organic products regulations came into function in June 2009. Organic foods are good for your health rather than foods grown using chemical fertilizers. People were not bothered whether they are eating organic food or synthetic foods until recent years. However, things have changed largely as majority of the consumers prefer for organic products. The organic products that are sold, exported, and imported in Canada should be certified by any of the regulatory bodies. Only products that have an organic content of 95% will be labelled as organic.

You can easily understand whether the product is organic or not by checking the label as Canada Organic label is necessary on the packages of any organic products. You cannot expect every product that sold under the name ‘organic’ is certified, but it is essential in Canada that the products should contain the certifying body’s name at least. If you are buying organic products directly from farmers or farm store, then check whether the certificate is displayed in the store. In Canada, there are many certification bodies approved by Canadian Food Inspection Agency. To get the certification, the person or organization have to apply to any of the CFIA accredited bodies within one year of the date on which the organic product is going to be sold.

The application should contain the ingredient and methods implemented in the manufacturing and processing of products to ensure that the product complies with the quality standards. The application should contain the names of all the ingredients and percentage of ingredients in the product, in case of multi-ingredient products. In order to maintain the organic certification, the applicant should pass all the annual inspections conducted by the certification body. The certification agencies usually conduct visits without the knowledge of the producers every year before giving permission to retain the certification.

In Canada, 70-80% of the organic products are imported. The imported products are mainly from US. The organic export from Canada is mainly grain, which is sold in European Union countries. Even though it is a great idea to switch into organic products, but this option is not viable for everyone because of the high cost.
