In Canada, organic products regulations came into function in June 2009. Organic foods are good for your health rather than foods grown using chemical fertilizers. People were not bothered whether they are eating organic food or synthetic foods until recent years. However, things have changed largely as majority of the consumers prefer for organic products. Today, more and more people prefer to use organic products rather than products made by using herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides. During the beginning of 2000s, several countries involved in the European Union such as Canada, United States, etc., have endorsed the use organic products in their respective countries to encourage healthy eating.
In Canada, the popularity of organic products is increasing. Hence, they have instituted various requirements to meet in order to achieve the quality of the products. According to the organic product regulations in Canada, all products that claim of being organic should comply with the regulation standards. The exported organic products that do not meet the quality and regulation standards should not be sold in Canada. The organic products that are sold, exported, and imported in Canada should be certified by any of the regulatory bodies. Only products that have an organic content of 95% will be labelled as organic.
You can easily understand whether the product is organic or not by checking the label as Canada Organic label is necessary on the packages of any organic products. You cannot expect every product that sold under the name ‘organic’ is certified, but it is essential in Canada that the products should contain the certifying body’s name at least. If you are buying organic products directly from farmers or farm store, then check whether the certificate is displayed in the store. In Canada, there are many certification bodies approved by Canadian Food Inspection Agency. To get the certification, the person or organization have to apply to any of the CFIA accredited bodies within one year of the date on which the organic product is going to be sold.
The application should contain the ingredient and methods implemented in the manufacturing and processing of products to ensure that the product complies with the quality standards. The application should contain the names of all the ingredients and percentage of ingredients in the product, in case of multi-ingredient products. In order to maintain the organic certification, the applicant should pass all the annual inspections conducted by the certification body. The certification agencies usually conduct visits without the knowledge of the producers every year before giving permission to retain the certification.
In Canada, 70-80% of the organic products are imported. The imported products are mainly from US. The organic export from Canada is mainly grain, which is sold in European Union countries. Even though it is a great idea to switch into organic products, but this option is not viable for everyone because of the high cost. Some of the stores that sell organic foods and natural makeup in Canada are Byward Fruit Market, Tara Natural Foods, Pfenning’s Organic Vegetable Farm, Natural Food Pantry, Whole Foods Market, Corn Crib Natural Foods Ltd, REG Natural Food, The Diet Store, Bellaphori Organic Mineral Makeup, Heavy Scent Body & Soul Therapies, etc.
