Bridgetown

Bridgetown is the capital and commercial centre of Barbados which is located to the south west of the island in the parish of St. Michael. Barbados is an island located to the north east of Venezuela in the Caribbean. The city was originally called as ‘Indian Bridge’ to commemorate the crude bridge which was constructed by the indigenous people of the Caribbean over the river Careenage. The name was later changed to St. Michael, and ultimately to Bridgetown. The city which has a population of over 80,000 was founded by British settlers in 1628.

In the earlier days, the Careenage was an important centre of commercial activity for inter-island trade. But, today the river is used by boats which are mainly pleasure boats and fishing craft. The Parliament Building of Barbados which was established in 1639 is located on Broad Street of Bridgetown. It has the reputation of being the third oldest Parliament in the entire Commonwealth.
