St. Lawrence Barbados
St. Lawrence is located in the parish of Christ Church and is known as St. Lawrence Gap, or more fondly referred to as ‘The Gap’. St. Lawrence Gap is a 1.3 km stretch of road in the parish of Christ Church and is predominantly known for its lively night life, restaurants, and shopping. It is undoubtedly the most popular place on the island for a variety of reasons. Everything – supermarkets, shops, restaurants, druggists – is very conveniently located. The place is lively and vibrant and the prices are reasonable.
Do make it a point to have a romp in the sea at St. Lawrence – the sea is unusually shallow at low tide and you can walk a long way into the water and the water hardly reaches your knees. You can have a lot of fun at the reef which borders the bay. Snorkel around the unusual rock formations and see schools of tropical fish swimming around. This area is extremely popular for water sports and you see a number of windsurfers, kayakers, and you can even see the odd kite surfer. Go a bit down south where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet – it is a sight to behold when you see the calm Caribbean meeting the rough Atlantic. But, the waters are a clear blue with visibility up to 50 feet.
At St. Lawrence, you can find a number of exceptionally fine restaurants around the bay which command an excellent view of the sea. David’s Place is well known for the authentic Barbadian cuisine. Bellini’s Trattoria is a place for great seafood and authentic Italian fare. Café Jungles Tree House is a place that everyone would like – they serve animal named dishes. They serve Tiger Snack and Gorilla food – the food is not for animals, but for humans. The animal theme matches with the ambience and the décor. You will find the restaurant Sweet Potatoes housed in a wooden building that overlooks the north east coast. The restaurant offers traditional Barbadian dishes such as the Mullins Bay Bol Jol, Garrison Fish Cakes, Spring Garden Wings, and Creole Stuffed Plantains as well as authentic Caribbean food. Try the Garden Terrace Restaurant for the ultimate dining experience with a stunning view of the Pink Pearl Beach of the south coast. The ambience is good and the food is great. Walk down the Gap and you can see a variety of night clubs. Try the Whistling Frog’s party nights and you could jazz all night. The Reggae Lounge is an open-air night club where can dance under the stars to some soft music. The Ship Inn is a pub that has a DJ and live bands.
You can go to any place you want and you find that everything is real close – Oistins takes 5 minutes and Bridgetown 20 minutes. The Barbados Golf Club is just 10 minutes away where you will find an exceptional golf course. The historic Garrison Area is quite close, and so is the Garrison Savannah Race Track. Horse racing takes place on Saturdays. Visit the Barbados Museum which is just 15 minutes away and find out about the history and culture of Barbados. Visit the George Washington House where he stayed here when he was young for a couple of months. Visit the Sheraton Mall which is a huge shopping and entertainment complex with about 120 shops, restaurants, and fast food outlets. There is also a multiplex cinema – the only one in Barbados.
St. Lawrence is, indeed, a very attractive place and there is no way anyone can stop you from having fun – not even yourself.
